Chapter 2: Forest and Wildlife Resources

  • ⚠️ Threats to forests and wildlife
  • 🛡️ Conservation methods और projects
  • 👥 Community Participation in conservation
  • 📜 CITES और other international efforts

🌍 1. Biodiversity (जैव विविधता)

📌 What is Biodiversity?

English: The variety of life forms found on Earth, including diversity of species, ecosystems, and genetic variations.

🔸 India's Biodiversity:

  • 🌿 47,000+ plant species (world में 10वें स्थान पर)
  • 🦁 90,000+ animal species
  • 🐘 12 mega biodiversity countries
  • 🦚 National Bird: Indian Peacock (मोर)
  • 🐅 National Animal: Bengal Tiger (बंगाल टाइगर)
  • 🌺 National Flower: Lotus (कमल)

💡 Interesting Fact: India में 4 biodiversity hotspots हैं: Himalayas, Western Ghats, Indo-Burma region, और Sundaland (Nicobar Islands)

🌲 2. Forest Resources in India

📌 Importance of Forests (वनों का महत्व):

  • 🏠 Habitat: Wildlife

🔸 Types of Forests in India:

1. 🌴 Tropical Evergreen Forests

Location: Western Ghats, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh

Rainfall: 200+ cm annually

Trees: Rosewood, Ebony, Mahogany

Feature: Dense, always green, no specific shedding season

2. 🍂 Tropical Deciduous Forests (Monsoon Forests)

Location: Most of India - MP, UP, Bihar, Odisha

Rainfall: 70-200 cm

Trees: Teak, Sal, Shisham, Sandalwood

Feature: Shed leaves in dry season (6-8 weeks)

3. 🏜️ Tropical Thorn Forests

Location: Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP, UP

Rainfall: Less than 70 cm

Trees: Babul, Ber, Khair, Kikar

Feature: Thorny bushes, long roots, small leaves

4. ❄️ Montane Forests (Mountain Forests)

Location: Himalayas, hill regions

Altitude: Different types at different heights

Trees: Pine, Deodar, Fir, Spruce, Birch

Feature: Conical shape, adapted to cold climate

5. 🌊 Mangrove Forests (Tidal Forests)

Location: Sundarbans (West Bengal), Andaman-Nicobar

Feature: Salt-tolerant, tidal areas

Trees: Sundari (in Sundarbans)

Importance: Cyclone protection, breeding ground for fish

⚠️ 3. Threats to Forests and Wildlife

🔸 Major Threats (मुख्य खतरे):

Reasons:

  • Agriculture के लिए land clearing
  • Mining और industrial development
  • Construction projects (roads, dams, buildings)
  • Shifting cultivation (Jhum cultivation)
2. 🔥 Forest Fires (जंगल की आग)

3. 🐘 Human-Wildlife Conflict

5. 🏭 Pollution और Climate Change

6. 🌾 Overgrazing और Over-exploitation

Cattle grazing और resources का excessive use।

🛡️ 4. Conservation of Forests and Wildlife

📌 Why Conservation?

  • 🌍 Ecological Balance: Ecosystem balance maintain
  • 🧬 Genetic Diversity: Future generations
  • 💊 Medicinal Plants: 80% medicines plants
  • 🌡️ Climate Regulation: Global warming control
  • 💰 Economic Benefits: Tourism, timber, non-timber products

🔸 Conservation Methods:

A. In-situ Conservation (प्राकृतिक आवास में):

1. 🏞️ National Parks:

Total: 106 National Parks in India

Features:

  • No human activity allowed (except tourism with permits)
  • Strict protection to wildlife
  • Examples: Jim Corbett (Uttarakhand), Kaziranga (Assam), Gir (Gujarat)
2. 🦌 Wildlife Sanctuaries:

Total: 551 Wildlife Sanctuaries

Features:

  • Some human activities allowed (grazing, collection of forest products)
  • Protection to specific animals
  • Examples: Periyar (Kerala), Sariska (Rajasthan)
3. 🌿 Biosphere Reserves:

Total: 18 Biosphere Reserves

Features:

  • Large areas to protect entire ecosystem
  • 3 zones: Core zone, Buffer zone, Transition zone
  • Examples: Nanda Devi, Nilgiri, Sundarbans

B. Ex-situ Conservation (प्राकृतिक आवास के बाहर):

🐅 5. Major Conservation Projects

1. 🐅 Project Tiger (1973)

Started: 1973 by Indira Gandhi
