प्रश्न Who, What, When, Where या "किसने कहा" जैसे होते हैं।
उदाहरण: "Ravi's shoes were worn out and his bag was patched in three places."
(Definition)
कई बार शब्द के तुरंत बाद उसका अर्थ लिख दिया जाता है। उदाहरण: "The path was arduous: steep, rocky and tiring." यहाँ कोलन (:) के बाद के शब्द बता रहे हैं कि arduous का अर्थ कठिन है।
संकेत 2: विपरीत (Contrast)
जहाँ "unlike, but, while, however" जैसे शब्द हों, वहाँ अर्थ विपरीत आता है। उदाहरण: "Unlike his frugal brother, Ravi spent money freely." यहाँ रवि खुलकर खर्च करता है, और frugal भाई उसके विपरीत है, तो frugal का अर्थ कम खर्च करने वाला हुआ।
संकेत 3: उदाहरण (Example)
"such as, like, including" के बाद जो उदाहरण आते हैं, वे शब्द का दायरा बताते हैं। उदाहरण: "She loves aquatic sports such as swimming and diving." तैरना और गोताखोरी जल से जुड़े हैं, इसलिए aquatic का अर्थ जल से संबंधित है।
संकेत 4: भाव (Tone)
वाक्य का माहौल शब्द का भाव बताता है। "The grey sky and the silent street made the evening dreary." धूसर आसमान और सन्नाटे से पता चलता है कि dreary का अर्थ उदास और नीरस है।
उपसर्ग और प्रत्यय से अर्थ
शब्द के आगे या पीछे जुड़े टुकड़े भी अर्थ बताते हैं। नीचे की तालिका अपनी कॉपी में उतार लीजिए:
| टुकड़ा | अर्थ | उदाहरण |
|---|---|---|
| un-, in-, im-, il-, ir- | नहीं | unhappy, incorrect, impossible, illegal, irregular |
- The child was reluctant to enter the dark room, so he stood at the door and refused to move.
- We had ample food for the journey, so nobody felt hungry even after two days.
- The future looked bleak: the fields were dry, the wells were empty and the crops had failed.
- A diligent student, she never missed a class and revised her notes every night.
- Unlike the well-known poet, the obscure writer was hardly read by anyone.
- His meagre salary barely covered the rent.
- The doctor was versatile: she could operate, teach and also write research papers.
- The teacher's stern look silenced the noisy class at once.
उत्तर देखिए
- reluctant = unwilling (अनिच्छुक)। संकेत: refused to move।
- ample = plenty, more than enough (भरपूर)। संकेत: nobody felt hungry।
- bleak = without hope, gloomy (निराशाजनक)। संकेत: dry fields, empty wells, failed crops।
- diligent = hardworking (परिश्रमी)। संकेत: never missed a class, revised every night।
- obscure = little known (अल्पज्ञात)। संकेत: "Unlike the well-known poet" वाला विपरीत-संकेत।
- meagre = very small in amount (अत्यल्प)। संकेत: barely covered the rent।
- versatile = able to do many things well (बहुमुखी)। संकेत: operate, teach and write।
- stern = strict, serious (कठोर)। संकेत: silenced the class at once।
6. उत्तर लिखने के नियम
नियम 1: प्रश्न को ही उत्तर का पहला वाक्य बनाइए
उत्तर पूरे वाक्य में लिखिए, और प्रश्न का ढाँचा उठाकर शुरू कीजिए। इससे उत्तर सटीक और पूरा लगता है।
| प्रश्न | कमज़ोर उत्तर | अच्छा उत्तर |
|---|---|---|
| Why did Meera think of the lamp? | Streetlights. | Meera thought of the lamp because the flickering streetlights reminded her of home. |
| What did the writer say about videos? | Quick view. | The writer said that a video gives a quick picture of a subject but not deep understanding. |
प्रश्न भूतकाल में हो तो उत्तर भी भूतकाल में दीजिए: "What did the grandmother do?" का उत्तर "She lit a lamp." होगा, "She lights" नहीं।
नियम 5: राय वाले प्रश्न में आधार दीजिए
मूल्यांकन वाले प्रश्न में "मुझे लगता है" के साथ गद्यांश का एक संकेत जोड़ दीजिए। जैसे: "The lamp symbolises love, because the grandmother lit it every evening even when no one used it."
नियम 6: शब्द या वाक्यांश वाले प्रश्न में सीमा का ध्यान रखिए
"Find a word" का उत्तर एक ही शब्द है, "Find a phrase" का उत्तर वाक्यांश।
The Slow Art of Reading
प्रकार: वर्णनात्मक (विचारात्मक) | कुल अंक: 12 (MCQ 5×1 + अति लघु 3×1 + लघु 2×2) | सुझाया समय: 20 मिनट
पहले गद्यांश पाँच कदमों के साथ पढ़िए और स्वयं हल कीजिए। उसके बाद ही उत्तर खोलिए।
[1] In an age of instant messages and endless scrolling, reading a book from beginning to end has begun to feel like a luxury. We skim headlines, glance at pictures and move on before a single idea has had time to settle in the mind. Yet those who read patiently know that a book does something that no notification can do: it asks us to stay.
[2] To stay with a book is to stay with another person's thoughts. A novel invites us to walk in the shoes of someone whose life is quite unlike our own. A history teaches us that the troubles of today have often been faced before, and sometimes overcome. Even a plain book of facts trains the mind to follow an argument from its first step to its last. This is why teachers insist that reading is not merely a school habit but a lifelong skill.
[3] Some people say that reading is a slow way to learn when a video can explain the same thing in three minutes. There is some truth in this. A short video can give a quick picture of a subject. But a picture is not the same as understanding. When we read, we pause, turn back, underline a line and argue silently with the writer. This active effort is what turns information into knowledge. A video, however clever, usually moves at its own speed, not ours.
[4] Reading also builds a quiet kind of strength. A student who can sit with a difficult chapter for an hour learns to face other difficulties with the same patience. Words gathered from books also become the tools with which we express our own feelings clearly and kindly.
[5] None of this means that screens must be thrown away. The wise reader uses both, choosing the video for a quick view and the book for a deep one. What matters is that we do not let the habit of staying disappear. A few pages every day, read without hurry, are enough to keep it alive.
A. Choose the correct option. (5×1 = 5)
- What has begun to feel like a luxury, according to the writer?
- watching videos
- reading a book from beginning to end
- sending instant messages
- visiting a library
- "A book asks us to stay" means that a book —
- wants us to stop reading
- demands our patient attention
- should be read only at home
- is meant for holidays
- Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit of reading?
- understanding the lives of other people
- learning to follow an argument
- becoming a faster speaker
- building patience
- The word "skim" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to —
- read carefully
- read quickly without going deep
- copy down
- memorise
- The writer's attitude towards screens is —
- hostile
- balanced
- fearful
- indifferent
B. Answer in one sentence / word. (3×1 = 3)
- Why does the writer say that "a picture is not the same as understanding"?
- What do we gather from books that help us express our feelings?
- Find a word from paragraph 1 which is the opposite of "impatiently".
C. Answer briefly, in about 30–40 words. (2×2 = 4)
- How does reading a novel differ from reading a book of facts, according to the passage?
- What advice does the writer give to keep the habit of reading alive?
उत्तर और कारण देखिए
A. MCQ- (b) reading a book from beginning to end। पहले अनुच्छेद की पहली पंक्ति में यही लिखा है (Local)।
- (b) demands our patient attention। "stay" का अर्थ यहाँ रुककर ध्यान देना है, ठहरना नहीं (Inferential)।
- (c) becoming a faster speaker। शेष तीनों लाभ अनुच्छेद 2 और 4 में हैं। यह "NOT mentioned" वाला प्रश्न है।
- (b) read quickly without going deep। वाक्य में skim के साथ "glance at pictures and move on" आया है, जो जल्दबाज़ी का भाव देता है (भाव-संकेत)।
- (b) balanced। लेखक कहता है कि screens फेंकने की ज़रूरत नहीं, वीडियो और किताब दोनों का उपयोग समझदारी है (अनुच्छेद 5)।
- Because a short video gives only a quick view, while real understanding needs the active effort of pausing, turning back and thinking. (1 अंक: कारण एक वाक्य में)
- Words. (अनुच्छेद 4)
- patiently (अनुच्छेद 1)
- A novel invites us to walk in the shoes of someone whose life is unlike ours, while a book of facts trains the mind to follow an argument from its first step to its last. (दो अंक: दोनों के अलग लाभ)
- The writer advises us to use both screens and books wisely, choosing videos for a quick view and books for a deep one. We should also read a few pages every day without hurry to keep the habit alive.
9. अभ्यास सेट 2: तथ्यात्मक गद्यांश – The Stepwell
प्रकार: तथ्यात्मक (Factual) | कुल अंक: 12 (MCQ 5×1 + अति लघु 3×1 + लघु 2×2) | सुझाया समय: 20 मिनट
पहले गद्यांश पाँच कदमों के साथ पढ़िए और स्वयं हल कीजिए। उसके बाद ही उत्तर खोलिए।
[1] In the dry lands of Rajasthan and Gujarat, water has always been precious. Long before taps and pipelines, people built stepwells, known in local languages as baoris or vavs, to store rainwater and keep it available through the long summer. A stepwell is unlike an ordinary well. Instead of a narrow shaft from which water is drawn up with a rope, it has broad flights of steps that lead down, level by level, to the water. As the water rises or falls with the seasons, people simply walk down or up to meet it.
[2] These structures were more than tanks. Because the deep stone walls kept the air cool, travellers rested in the shaded galleries during the heat of the day. Women gathered there to fill their pots and to talk. Small shrines and carved pillars turned many stepwells into places of gathering and quiet worship as well. Skilled masons decorated the walls with patterns, so that a practical building became a work of art.
[3] With the coming of piped water and handpumps, stepwells slowly lost their purpose. Many were neglected, filled with garbage or simply forgotten. But in recent years people have begun to see their value once again. Groups of citizens, historians and government departments have cleaned and repaired several of them. Visitors now come to admire their geometry, and engineers study how they collected water so well.
[4] The lesson of the stepwell is simple. A community that respects water and plans for the dry months can survive on very little. In an age when many cities worry about shrinking water supplies, these old structures remind us that careful storage and shared care of water are ideas worth reviving.
A. Choose the correct option. (5×1 = 5)
- Stepwells are known in local languages as —
- baoris or vavs
- tanks or ponds
- kunds or talabs
- jhils or nalas
- How does a stepwell differ from an ordinary well?
- It is much smaller.
- Broad steps lead down to its water.
- It has no stone walls.
- It is used only for worship.
- The air inside a stepwell stayed cool because —
- it was built near a river
- its deep stone walls kept the heat out
- it was covered with a roof of glass
- water was drawn up with ropes
- The word "neglected" in paragraph 3 means —
- admired
- left uncared for
- sold
- decorated
- Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a use of stepwells?
- resting in the shade
- collecting water
- growing crops in the galleries
- quiet worship
B. Answer in one sentence / word. (3×1 = 3)
- Why did stepwells lose their purpose?
- Name any two groups who have helped repair stepwells in recent years.
- Find a word from paragraph 2 which means "useful for everyday needs".
C. Answer briefly, in about 30–40 words. (2×2 = 4)
- Describe how a person reached the water in a stepwell.
- What lesson does the stepwell teach us?
उत्तर और कारण देखिए
A. MCQ- (a) baoris or vavs। अनुच्छेद 1 की दूसरी पंक्ति (Local)।
- (b) Broad steps lead down to its water। अनुच्छेद 1 में "unlike an ordinary well... broad flights of steps"।
- (b) its deep stone walls kept the heat out। अनुच्छेद 2 की पहली-दूसरी पंक्ति में कारण दिया है ("Because the deep stone walls kept the air cool")।
- (b) left uncared for। आगे के शब्द "filled with garbage or simply forgotten" भाव-संकेत देते हैं।
- (c) growing crops in the galleries। आराम, पानी भरना और पूजा गद्यांश में हैं, खेती का उल्लेख नहीं।
- They lost their purpose with the coming of piped water and handpumps.
- Any two of: citizens, historians, government departments.
- practical (अनुच्छेद 2 का अंतिम वाक्य)
- A person walked down broad flights of steps, level by level, to reach the water. As the water rose or fell with the seasons, people simply walked down or up to meet it.
- The stepwell teaches us that a community which respects water and plans for the dry months can survive on very little. Careful storage and shared care of water are ideas worth reviving.
10. अभ्यास सेट 3: साहित्यिक गद्यांश – The Lamp on the Stair
प्रकार: साहित्यिक (Literary) | कुल अंक: 12 (MCQ 5×1 + अति लघु 3×1 + लघु 2×2) | सुझाया समय: 20 मिनट
पहले गद्यांश पाँच कदमों के साथ पढ़िए और स्वयं हल कीजिए। उसके बाद ही उत्तर खोलिए।
[1] Meera's grandmother had a habit that Meera had never understood. Every evening, when the light faded from the courtyard, the old woman lit a small brass lamp and placed it on the third step of the staircase. It was not near the door, nor near the window. It stood alone on the stair, and no one ever used it to see.
[2] "Why the third step, Nani?" Meera had asked once, at ten years old. Her grandmother only smiled and said, "Some lamps are not meant to show the way. They are meant to show that someone is waiting."
[3] Meera left the village at seventeen for a college in the city. The city was loud and bright, and no lamp anywhere seemed to wait for her. In her small rented room she studied late, ate cold food and told herself that she did not miss home. But on certain evenings, when the streetlights flickered on, she found herself thinking of the brass lamp on the third step, its small flame leaning in the draught.
[4] Years later she returned, a doctor now, her bag heavy with certificates and her heart heavier with an odd fear. The courtyard was quieter than she remembered. The staircase, however, was exactly the same, and on the third step stood a lamp, lit, as if the evening had not moved at all.
[5] Her grandmother, frail and half-blind, was sitting nearby with her hands folded. "You knew I was coming?" Meera asked.
[6] "I did not know when," said the old woman. "I only knew that the lamp must be lit until you did."
[7] Meera sat down on the step beside the flame. For the first time in many years she did not feel like a traveller. She felt like someone who had, at last, arrived.
A. Choose the correct option. (5×1 = 5)
- Where did the grandmother place the lamp every evening?
- near the door
- near the window
- on the third step of the staircase
- in the kitchen
- According to the grandmother, why is such a lamp lit?
- to show the way in the dark
- to show that someone is waiting
- to keep insects away
- to please the neighbours
- Meera's feeling in the city can best be described as —
- proud of her success
- lonely, though she denied missing home
- angry with her grandmother
- careless about her studies
- The word "frail" in paragraph 5 means —
- weak and delicate
- cheerful
- wealthy
- strict
- The tone of the passage is —
- humorous
- gentle and emotional
- angry
- formal and factual
B. Answer in one sentence / word. (3×1 = 3)
- What was Meera by profession when she returned home?
- Why did Meera think of the lamp on certain evenings in the city?
- Find a word from the last paragraph which means "a person on a journey".
C. Answer briefly, in about 30–40 words. (2×2 = 4)
- What does the lamp symbolise in the passage?
- How did Meera feel when she sat beside the lamp, and why?
उत्तर और कारण देखिए
A. MCQ- (c) on the third step of the staircase। अनुच्छेद 1 (Local)।
- (b) to show that someone is waiting। अनुच्छेद 2 में नानी का वाक्य: "Some lamps are not meant to show the way..."।
- (b) lonely, though she denied missing home। "told herself that she did not miss home" और lamp की याद, दोनों मिलकर यह अनुमान देते हैं (Inferential)।
- (a) weak and delicate। "half-blind, sitting with her hands folded" से कमज़ोरी का भाव मिलता है।
- (b) gentle and emotional। कोमल भाषा और भावनाओं पर केंद्रित वर्णन है, इसलिए यही स्वर है।
- She was a doctor. (अनुच्छेद 4)
- Because the flickering streetlights reminded her of the brass lamp at home. (अनुच्छेद 3)
- traveller
- The lamp symbolises love and patient waiting. It does not light the way; it shows that someone at home is waiting for Meera, and that she is remembered even when she is far away.
- Meera felt that she was no longer a traveller but someone who had arrived. Sitting beside the lamp, which her grandmother had kept lit for her, she knew that she was truly home.
11. आम गलतियाँ
- गद्यांश की पूरी पंक्ति उतार देना: उत्तर का ज़रूरी हिस्सा चुनिए और अपने वाक्य में लिखिए।
- गद्यांश से बाहर की बात लिखना: अपठित गद्यांश में आपका सामान्य ज्ञान नहीं, गद्यांश की बात पूछी जाती है।
- NOT / EXCEPT न पढ़ना: ऐसे प्रश्न में उलटा सोचना होता है। इन शब्दों को गोला लगाइए।
- Tense बदल देना: प्रश्न भूतकाल में हो तो उत्तर भी भूतकाल में लिखिए।
- शब्द के अर्थ में हिन्दी लिखना: जहाँ "Find a word from the passage" पूछा हो, वहाँ गद्यांश का ही शब्द लिखिए।

Justify." | पहले सही या गलत लिखिए, फिर गद्यांश की पंक्ति से कारण दीजिए |
| 3 | वाक्य पूरा कीजिए | "Complete the sentence." | गद्यांश के शब्द ही बिठाइए, व्याकरण की जाँच कीजिए |
| 4 | संदर्भ (Reference) | "What does 'it/this/they' refer to?" | सर्वनाम से ठीक पहले के वाक्य में देखिए |

| 7 | अनुमान (Inference) | "What can be inferred?"
"But, however, yet, although, despite" जैसे शब्दों के बाद अक्सर लेखक की असली बात आती है। सेट 1 के तीसरे अनुच्छेद में लेखक पहले वीडियो की तारीफ़ करता है ("There is some truth in this"), फिर "But" लगाकर असली बात कहता है: चित्र समझ के बराबर नहीं। जो पाठक "But" के बाद का वाक्य नहीं पढ़ता, वह लेखक की राय उलटी समझ लेता है।
मात्रा वाले शब्द: हल्के और भारी दावे
"All, always, never, only, none" भारी दावे हैं, जबकि "some, often, many, most, few, sometimes" हल्के हैं। विकल्प चुनते समय देखिए कि गद्यांश ने कितना कहा है और विकल्प कितना।
| शब्द | अर्थ | असर |
|---|---|---|
| all, every, always | बिना अपवाद के | ज़्यादातर गलत विकल्पों में मिलते हैं |
| most, many, often | अधिकतर | प्रायः सही विकल्पों में |
The Language of Honeybees
प्रकार: तथ्यात्मक (Factual) | कुल अंक: 12 (MCQ 5×1 + अति लघु 3×1 + लघु 2×2) | सुझाया समय: 20 मिनट
पहले गद्यांश पाँच कदमों के साथ पढ़िए और स्वयं हल कीजिए। उसके बाद ही उत्तर खोलिए।
[1] A honeybee colony is a busy city. Thousands of bees live together in one hive, and each has a job: some clean the hive, some guard the entrance, some care for the young, and a few, called scouts, fly out to look for flowers. Yet none of them can speak or write. How, then, does the colony know where the food is?
[2] The answer was discovered by Karl von Frisch, an Austrian scientist who watched bees for many years. He noticed that a scout which had found good flowers returned to the hive and began to move in a strange pattern on the honeycomb. It ran forward in a straight line while shaking its body from side to side, then circled back and repeated the movement. He called this the waggle dance.
[3] The dance, he found, is a message in two parts. The angle of the straight run, measured from the upright direction of the comb, tells the other bees which way to fly in relation to the sun. The length of the waggle tells them how far the flowers are: the longer the waggle, the greater the distance. Bees waiting in the dark hive follow the dancer closely, feeling its movements with their antennae, and then fly out in the right direction.
[4] Von Frisch's discovery showed that animals as small as insects can share detailed information. In 1973 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on animal behaviour.
[5] The dance matters to us as well. Honeybees carry pollen from flower to flower, and many of our crops depend on this work. When we understand how bees find their food, we understand better why they need clean fields, safe flowers and protected hives.
A. Choose the correct option. (5×1 = 5)
- Scouts are the bees that —
- guard the entrance
- fly out to look for flowers
- clean the hive
- care for the young
- Who discovered the meaning of the waggle dance?
- Konrad Lorenz
- Karl von Frisch
- a beekeeper
- a farmer
- The length of the waggle tells the other bees —
- how far the flowers are
- the colour of the flowers
- the time of day
- the number of bees needed
- Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
- direction in relation to the sun
- the distance of the flowers
- the colour of the flowers
- the role of the antennae
- By calling a colony "a busy city", the writer shows that —
- bees live in cities
- many individuals work together at different jobs
- bees are noisy
- the hive is very large
B. Answer in one sentence / word. (3×1 = 3)
- What name did von Frisch give to the strange movement of the scout?
- Why are honeybees important for our crops?
- Find a word from paragraph 4 which means "full of small details".
C. Answer briefly, in about 30–40 words. (2×2 = 4)
- Explain how the waggle dance tells other bees where the flowers are.
- Why does the writer say that the dance "matters to us as well"?
उत्तर और कारण देखिए
A. MCQ- (b) fly out to look for flowers। अनुच्छेद 1 (Local)।
- (b) Karl von Frisch। अनुच्छेद 2।
- (a) how far the flowers are। अनुच्छेद 3: "the longer the waggle, the greater the distance"।
- (c) the colour of the flowers। शेष तीनों अनुच्छेद 3 में आए हैं ("NOT mentioned" वाला प्रश्न)।
- (b) many individuals work together at different jobs। "city" की तुलना का कारण अगले वाक्य में है: हर मधुमक्खी का अपना काम है (Inferential)।
- He called it the waggle dance.
- Because they carry pollen from flower to flower, and many crops depend on this work.
- detailed (अनुच्छेद 4: "detailed information")
- The dance is a message in two parts. The angle of the straight run shows the direction to fly in relation to the sun, and the length of the waggle shows how far the flowers are. The waiting bees follow it and fly out accordingly.
- The writer says so because honeybees carry pollen from flower to flower and many of our crops depend on them. Understanding how bees find food helps us see why they need clean fields, safe flowers and protected hives.
18. अभ्यास सेट 5: विचारात्मक गद्यांश – Learning from Failure
प्रकार: वर्णनात्मक / विचारात्मक (Discursive) | कुल अंक: 12 (MCQ 5×1 + अति लघु 3×1 + लघु 2×2) | सुझाया समय: 20 मिनट
पहले गद्यांश पाँच कदमों के साथ पढ़िए और स्वयं हल कीजिए। उसके बाद ही उत्तर खोलिए।
[1] Nobody enjoys failing. A low mark in an examination, a lost race or a rejected application can leave us feeling that we are not good enough. Our first instinct is to hide the result and forget about it as quickly as possible.
[2] Yet many admired people speak of failure as their best teacher. Every failure carries information. It shows which method did not work, which part of the preparation was weak and which choice needs to be rethought. A student who studies a wrong answer carefully often learns more than one who never makes a mistake and never asks why.
[3] There is another benefit. Failure teaches humility, because it reminds us that success is never guaranteed. It also builds resilience, the ability to rise again after a fall. A person who has failed and recovered is rarely frightened by the next difficulty.
[4] However, this does not mean that failure should be welcomed for its own sake, or that carelessness deserves comfort. Failure teaches only those who are willing to examine it honestly. If we blame others or give up, the lesson is lost. The difference between a setback and a defeat often lies in what we do the next morning.
[5] Schools have a role too. When a classroom treats mistakes as shameful, students learn to hide them. When it treats mistakes as material to work with, students learn to ask questions. A society that fears failure produces cautious people; one that understands it produces builders.
A. Choose the correct option. (5×1 = 5)
- "Our first instinct is to hide the result" shows that people usually feel —
- proud of failure
- uncomfortable about failure
- indifferent to results
- eager to celebrate
- According to the writer, every failure gives us —
- money
- information about what went wrong
- a holiday
- a new friend
- The word "resilience" in paragraph 3 means —
- ability to recover after difficulty
- love of competition
- fear of the future
- lack of interest
- The word "However" at the start of paragraph 4 signals —
- an added example
- a limit to the argument so far
- a summary
- a change of topic
- The tone of the passage is —
- reflective and encouraging
- angry and bitter
- humorous
- hopeless
B. Answer in one sentence / word. (3×1 = 3)
- What does the writer say about a student who studies a wrong answer carefully?
- When is the lesson of failure lost, according to the passage?
- Find a word from paragraph 3 which means "the quality of being humble".
C. Answer briefly, in about 30–40 words. (2×2 = 4)
- How can a classroom help students deal with failure?
- Explain: "The difference between a setback and a defeat often lies in what we do the next morning."
उत्तर और कारण देखिए
A. MCQ- (b) uncomfortable about failure। हार छिपाने की इच्छा असहजता दिखाती है (Inferential)।
- (b) information about what went wrong। अनुच्छेद 2: "Every failure carries information"।
- (a) ability to recover after difficulty। वाक्य में ही परिभाषा है: "the ability to rise again after a fall"।
- (b) a limit to the argument so far। "However" मोड़ वाला शब्द है: लेखक कहता है कि असफलता का स्वागत बिना सोचे नहीं करना चाहिए।
- (a) reflective and encouraging। लेखक विचार करता है और पाठक को प्रोत्साहित भी करता है।
- The writer says that such a student often learns more than one who never makes a mistake and never asks why.
- The lesson is lost when we blame others or give up.
- humility (अनुच्छेद 3)
- A classroom can help by treating mistakes as material to work with, not as something shameful. Then students learn to ask questions instead of hiding their errors.
- It means that a failure becomes a mere setback if we examine it and try again the next day, but it becomes a defeat if we blame others or give up. Our response, not the failure itself, decides the outcome.
19. अभ्यास सेट 6: साहित्यिक गद्यांश – The Extra Coin
प्रकार: साहित्यिक (Literary) | कुल अंक: 12 (MCQ 5×1 + अति लघु 3×1 + लघु 2×2) | सुझाया समय: 20 मिनट
पहले गद्यांश पाँच कदमों के साथ पढ़िए और स्वयं हल कीजिए। उसके बाद ही उत्तर खोलिए।
[1] Every morning, before the school bell rang, twelve-year-old Imran stopped at Baba Rahim's tea stall to buy one glass of tea for his uncle, who worked at the printing press on the corner. The stall was a wooden cart with a blackened kettle, and Baba Rahim, who was nearly seventy, counted every coin twice.
[2] One rainy Monday, Imran paid with a ten-rupee note. The tea cost five rupees, but Baba Rahim, distracted by another customer, handed back a fifty-rupee note as change. Imran noticed only when he reached the school gate. He stood there with the note in his hand while the bell rang and other children ran past him into the building.
[3] He thought of the canteen samosas he could never afford. He thought of the torn cover of his geometry book. Then he thought of Baba Rahim's hands, trembling slightly as they counted the day's coins. He turned around and ran back through the rain.
[4] The old man was sitting on his stool, staring at the tin box in front of him, his forehead creased like folded paper. "Baba, you gave me too much," said Imran, a little breathless, holding out the note. Baba Rahim took it with unsteady fingers and counted out five rupees. Then he took a sugary biscuit from a glass jar, wrapped it in paper and pressed it into the boy's hand. "That coin would have been my dinner," he said softly. "You have given me something better than money."
[5] Imran reached his class late and was scolded by the teacher. Yet, as he sat down, he realised that he felt lighter than he had felt all week, and the rain no longer seemed cold.
A. Choose the correct option. (5×1 = 5)

- a holiday trip
- the samosas and the torn geometry book
- a new bicycle
- his uncle’s salary
- Imran's decision to return the note shows that he is —
- honest and considerate
- careless and slow
- greedy but afraid
- proud and angry
- "His forehead creased like folded paper" suggests that Baba Rahim was —
- worried
- sleepy
- delighted
- angry with Imran
- The tone of the passage is —
- warm and touching
- sarcastic
- formal and factual
- frightening
B. Answer in one sentence / word. (3×1 = 3)
- Why did Imran buy tea every morning?
- What did Baba Rahim give Imran as a reward?
- Find a word from paragraph 4 which means "gently or in a low voice".
C. Answer briefly, in about 30–40 words. (2×2 = 4)
- Why did Imran turn back even though he was already late?
- What does the last paragraph suggest about how Imran felt after returning the note?
उत्तर और कारण देखिए
A. MCQ- (b) He gave Imran a fifty-rupee note as change। अनुच्छेद 2 (Local)।
- (b) the samosas and the torn geometry book। अनुच्छेद 3 में उसकी ज़रूरतें गिनाई गई हैं।
- (a) honest and considerate।
