IV, Reference to the Context,

बोध (comprehension)“From which tree did the crow shake down the dust of snow?”; “What do ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ stand for in the poem?”
अनुमान और व्याख्या (inference)“Why is the tiger’s rage ‘quiet’?”; “Why does the poet say, ‘I would not intrude on him’?”
रसग्रहण (appreciation)“Name the poetic device in ‘like a robin at a worm’. What does it show?”; “What is the rhyme scheme?”

Simile (उपमा)‘like’ या ‘as’ से दो वस्तुओं की तुलनाlike newly discharged patients (The Trees); like a robin at a worm (Custard)
Metaphor (रूपक)बिना ‘like/as’ एक वस्तु को दूसरी कहनाकोहरा = बिल्ली (Fog); honey-coloured ramparts = बाल (For Anne Gregory)
Personification (मानवीकरण)निर्जीव या प्रकृति में मानवीय क्रिया-गुणtrees stumbling forward; roots work (The Trees)
(Amanda!)
Imagery (बिंब)इंद्रियों को चित्र जैसा अनुभव देने वाले शब्दlanguid, emerald sea (Amanda!); pads of velvet quiet (Tiger)
(Fire and Ice)
(Custard)
Anyone would think that I nagged at you (Amanda!)
Weeck!, Meowch! (Custard)
Rhyme scheme (तुक-योजना)पंक्तियों के अंत की तुक को a, b, c से लिखनाabaabcbcb (Fire and Ice); ababcc (How to Tell Wild Animals)
(The Ball Poem)

Simile: ‘like a robin at a worm’. It shows how eagerly Custard attacks.”

1: Dust of Snow — Robert Frost

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)A crow shakes some dust of snow from a hemlock tree down on the poet. This small happening gives his heart a change of mood and saves some part of a day that he had rued.
  1. VSAFrom which tree did the crow shake down the dust of snow? [1]
  2. SAHow did the dust of snow change the poet’s mood? [1]
  3. AppreciationA crow and a hemlock are usually linked with gloom. What does the ‘dust of snow’ stand for in the poem? [1]
  1. From a hemlock tree.
  2. The poet was sad and full of regret about the day. The small, unexpected touch of snow lifted his heart, so that part of the day was saved from regret.
  3. It stands for a small, unexpected moment of joy or relief. The poem shows that a small thing can have a larger significance and lift a heavy mood.
तुक-योजनाabab cdcd (crow–snow, me–tree; heart–part, mood–rued)

2: Fire and Ice — Robert Frost

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)Some say the world will end in fire, and some say in ice. From what he has tasted of desire, the poet holds with those who favour fire. But if the world had to perish twice, he knows enough of hate to say that ice would also be great for destruction and would suffice.
  1. VSAWhat do some people say the world will end in? [1]
  2. SAWhat do ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ stand for in the poem? [1]
  3. AppreciationWhat is the rhyme scheme of the poem? How does it help to bring out the contrasting ideas? [1]
  1. Some say it will end in fire, and some say in ice.
  2. Fire stands for desire (greed, lust) and ice stands for hate (coldness, indifference). The poet has tasted desire and knows enough of hate.
  3. The rhyme scheme is abaabcbcb. The rhymes fire–desire–fire and ice–twice–ice–suffice keep the two ideas, fire and ice, set against each other, and the short last lines end the poem quietly and firmly.
तुक-योजनाabaabcbcb (fire, ice, desire, fire, twice, hate, ice, great, suffice)
काव्य-उपकरणप्रतीकवाद (fire, ice); अल्प-कथन (understatement) अंतिम पंक्तियों में; कवि का निजी स्वर ‘I hold with…’।

3: A Tiger in the Zoo — Leslie Norris

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)In the cage the tiger stalks the few steps of his cage on pads of velvet quiet, with a quiet rage. He is locked in a concrete cell, his strength behind bars, and he ignores the visitors.
  1. ObjectiveThe tiger ignores (a) the guards (b) the visitors (c) the stars (d) the deer. [1]
  2. SAWhy is the tiger’s rage ‘quiet’? [1]
  3. AppreciationThe word ‘quiet’ is repeated in ‘pads of velvet quiet’ and ‘quiet rage’. What is the effect of this repetition? [1]
  1. (b) the visitors.
  2. He is angry at being caged but cannot act on his anger. It is held back, so it shows only in his silent, restless stalking up and down the cage.
  3. The repetition joins the tiger’s soft, silent steps with his hidden anger. It stresses that behind the calm look there is suppressed fury.
काव्य-उपकरणविरोध (contrast): जंगल में lurking, sliding, snarling बनाम पिंजरे में stalking, ignoring; दोहराव (quiet, brilliant); बिंब (pads of velvet quiet)।

4: How to Tell Wild Animals — Carolyn Wells

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)If you go by chance to jungles in the east and a large tawny beast advances and roars at you as you are dying, you will know it is the Asian Lion. If a noble wild beast with black stripes on a yellow ground greets you, just notice whether he eats you; this simple rule helps you to discern the Bengal Tiger.
  1. VSAWhich animal roars at you ‘as you’re dying’, according to the poet? [1]
  2. SAHow does the poet suggest that you can identify the Bengal Tiger? Why is this funny? [1]
  3. AppreciationWrite the rhyme scheme of the second stanza (the one about the tiger). What makes the poem humorous? [1]
  1. The Asian Lion.
  2. He says that you should just notice whether the beast eats you. It is funny because you could use this ‘rule’ only when it is too late.
  3. The rhyme scheme is ababcc (round–ground, greets you–eats you, learn–discern). The humour comes from the absurd advice and the exaggeration: the animal can be identified only when it attacks.

5: The Ball Poem — John Berryman

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)A boy’s ball goes merrily bouncing down the street and then into the water of the harbour. It is of no use to tell him that there are other balls: an ultimate shaking grief fixes him as he stands rigid, trembling and staring down into the harbour. The poet would not intrude on him, since a dime or another ball is worthless. Behind his desperate eyes, the boy is learning the epistemology of loss: how to stand up.
  1. VSAWhere did the boy’s ball finally go? [1]
  2. SAWhy does the poet say, ‘I would not intrude on him’, and not offer money for another ball? [1]
  3. AppreciationWhat does the poet mean by ‘the epistemology of loss’? What is the boy learning? [1]
  1. Into the water of the harbour.
  2. The boy’s grief is deep and personal. A dime or another ball cannot replace what he feels, and the poet does not want to enter a grief that is the boy’s own.
  3. It means understanding what loss is. The boy is learning that things get lost and cannot always be bought back, and how to stand up and carry on after a loss. It is his first sense of responsibility in a world of possessions.

6: Amanda! — Robin Klein

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)A grown-up keeps telling Amanda not to bite her nails, not to hunch her shoulders and to sit up straight. In brackets, Amanda imagines herself a mermaid, the sole inhabitant of a languid, emerald sea, drifting blissfully.
  1. VSAWhat does Amanda imagine herself to be in the second stanza? [1]
  2. SAWhy are stanzas 2, 4 and 6 given in brackets? [1]
  3. AppreciationHow does the poet contrast the two voices in the poem? [1]
  1. A mermaid.
  2. They are Amanda’s own thoughts and daydreams, not spoken aloud. She escapes the constant nagging in her imagination, and the grown-up speaker does not hear them.
  3. The grown-up’s stanzas are commands and complaints, each ending with ‘Amanda!’. Amanda’s bracketed stanzas are calm, dreamy, rhymed pictures of freedom (a mermaid, an orphan, Rapunzel).

7: The Trees — Adrienne Rich

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)The trees inside the house are moving out into the forest, which was empty all these days. All night their roots work to disengage themselves from the cracks in the veranda floor, and the leaves strain toward the glass. The boughs shuffle under the roof like newly discharged patients. The poet sits inside writing long letters in which she scarcely mentions the departure of the forest from the house.
  1. VSAWhere are the trees at the beginning of the poem, and where are they going? [1]
  2. SAWhy does the poet scarcely mention the departure of the forest in her letters? [1]
  3. AppreciationIdentify the simile in the extract. What does it suggest about the trees? [1]
  1. The trees are inside the house; they are moving out into the forest.
  2. The event is so unusual and unexpected that she may feel uneasy speaking of it. People are often silent about important happenings that embarrass them.
  3. The simile is ‘like newly discharged patients’. It suggests that the trees, long cramped inside, are stiff, slow and half-dazed, like patients just released from hospital, but now free to move.
काव्य-उपकरणमानवीकरण (roots work, boughs shuffling, trees stumbling); उपमा (like newly discharged patients; moon broken like a mirror); बिंब (sun bury its feet in shadow)।

8: Fog — Carl Sandburg

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)The poet says that the fog arrives as softly as a cat on little feet. It then settles down, looking over the harbour and the city, sitting quietly on its haunches, and after a while it moves on.
  1. VSAWhat does ‘it’ in the third line of the poem refer to? [1]
  2. SAFind two details that tell us the fog is like a cat. [1]
  3. AppreciationIs the figure of speech here a simile or a metaphor? Give a reason. [1]
  1. The fog.
  2. It comes on ‘little cat feet’, and it sits looking over the harbour and city on silent haunches, and then moves on, as a cat does.
  3. It is a metaphor. The poet does not say the fog is ‘like’ a cat; he speaks of the fog as if it were a cat.

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)Belinda lives in a little white house with her kitten Ink, her mouse Blink, her dog Mustard and her pet dragon Custard, whom she calls a coward. When a pirate climbs in through the window, Belinda cries for help, Mustard flees, Ink trickles down and Blink goes into a mousehole. But Custard jumps up, snorting like an engine, and goes at the pirate like a robin at a worm: he gobbles him up.
  1. VSAWho saved Belinda and the others from the pirate? [1]
  2. SACustard is called a ‘cowardly dragon’. Why, then, is he the hero of the poem? [1]
  3. AppreciationName the poetic device in ‘like a robin at a worm’. What does it show? [1]
  1. Custard, the dragon.
  2. The others tease him because he cries for a nice safe cage. Yet when the pirate comes, Mustard flees, Ink trickles away and Blink hides in a mousehole. Only Custard attacks and gobbles up the pirate.
  3. It is a simile, because it compares with ‘like’. It shows how quickly and eagerly Custard attacks the pirate, who is easy prey for him, and it adds humour.

Extract (हमारे शब्दों में लिखा गया अंश)The young man tells Anne that young men, thrown into despair by the great honey-coloured ramparts at her ear, will never love her for herself alone and not for her yellow hair. Anne replies that she can get a hair-dye and set such a colour there, brown, black or carrot, so that young men may love her for herself alone.
  1. VSAWhat colour is Anne Gregory’s hair? [1]
  2. SAWhat does Anne say she can do, and why? [1]
  3. AppreciationWhat does ‘honey-coloured ramparts’ stand for? Name the device. [1]
  1. Yellow (honey-coloured).
  2. She says she can get a hair-dye and change the colour to brown, black or carrot, so that young men may love her for herself alone, and not for her yellow hair.
  3. It is a metaphor for her thick, golden hair. Ramparts are high walls round a fort, so the phrase suggests hair so striking that men are overpowered by it and cannot see her as she is.

  1. ‘Fire and Ice’
    • abab cdcd
    • abaabcbcb
    • ababcc
    • aabb

  2. ‘The fog comes on little cat feet’

  3. ‘Amanda!’

  4. ‘like a robin at a worm’ (The Tale of Custard the Dragon)

  5. ‘Dust of Snow’ में ‘dust of snow’ किसका प्रतीक माना जा सकता है?
