Section A — Reading (14 Marks)

Q1. Read the passage and answer the questions. (7 × 1 = 7)

Every Saturday, students of a small town school visited a community garden. At first, the garden was full of plastic waste and dry leaves. Their science teacher, Ms Sharma, helped them separate recyclable materials from organic waste. The students made compost from fallen leaves and vegetable peels. They planted native flowers because these needed less water and attracted butterflies. A group of students placed a large container to collect rainwater from the roof of a nearby shed. During summer, the stored water helped the plants survive. Soon, neighbours began visiting the garden. Some brought seeds, while others shared gardening tools. The students also put up signs requesting visitors not to litter. After six months, the garden became a peaceful place where children read books and older people took short walks. The project taught everyone that small actions, when repeated regularly, can improve a neighbourhood.

A school library opened a reading corner near its entrance. The corner had short biographies, science magazines and illustrated stories. Students could borrow one book every week. To encourage reading, the librarian invited children to write a three-sentence review after returning each book. Reviews were displayed on a noticeboard. Soon, students started recommending books to their friends. The librarian noticed that children who had rarely borrowed books were now visiting the library regularly. She also arranged a reading hour on Fridays. During this hour, students could read silently or discuss a book in small groups. The programme did not require expensive equipment. It succeeded because the books were easy to reach, the rules were simple and students were free to choose what interested them.

Q4 (Paragraph):

Time is valuable for every student. A good timetable helps us balance study, exercise, rest and hobbies. We should complete important work before spending time on entertainment. Regular revision is more useful than studying everything on the last day. Being punctual also shows respect for other people. Students who plan their day can reduce stress and improve their learning. We must remember that lost money may be earned again, but lost time never returns. Therefore, using time wisely is an important habit for success.

Q5 (Story):

One morning, Meena found a wallet near the school bus stop. It contained some money and a card with a phone number. She immediately informed her teacher. They called the number and spoke to the owner, an elderly man. He arrived at the school and identified the wallet correctly. Meena returned it without taking anything. The man thanked her warmly. Her principal praised her honesty during assembly. Meena felt happy because she had helped someone in need. She learnt that doing the right thing brings greater satisfaction than any reward.
