Mrs. Pumphrey is Tricki's wealthy owner who pampers him excessively with rich food and treats, causing him to become seriously overweight and ill.
Tricki's illness was caused by overfeeding and lack of exercise. Mrs. Pumphrey gave him rich food, cakes, and chocolates while he did no physical activity, making him unhealthy.
Ironically, there was no surgery at all. Tricki recovered simply by being given a controlled diet and exercise with other dogs. Mrs. Pumphrey thought it was a miraculous surgical achievement.
Hari Singh is the young thief and narrator of the story. He changes his name every month to avoid the police and former employers.
Anil is a struggling writer who writes for magazines. His income is irregular - sometimes he borrows, sometimes he lends. He lives a simple life and is very trusting.
Hari Singh realized that if he ran away with the money, he would lose his chance to learn reading and writing from Anil. Education and a better future were more valuable to him than the stolen money.
Ausable is a secret agent, though he doesn't look like the typical romantic idea of a spy. He is fat and lives in a small hotel room, but is very clever and resourceful.
Max, a rival spy, wanted an important report concerning some new missiles that Ausable was supposed to receive that night. He broke into Ausable's room to steal it.
Ausable cleverly invented a story about a non-existent balcony below the window. When someone knocked on the door, Max jumped out the window to hide on the balcony, but there was no balcony - he fell to his death.
Horace Danby loved rare and expensive books. He stole once a year to finance his hobby of buying books through an agent. He was otherwise a respectable locksmith.
Horace Danby was a careful thief who robbed only one safe every year. He planned carefully for weeks and made sure to steal enough to last him a year and buy the rare books he wanted.
A clever young woman, also a thief, pretended to be the lady of the house who had forgotten the safe's combination. She tricked Horace into opening the safe for her without gloves, leaving his fingerprints everywhere.
Griffin was a brilliant scientist who discovered how to make himself invisible. However, he misused this power for selfish purposes and became a lawless person.
Griffin set fire to his landlord's house because the landlord had tried to evict him. This act of revenge shows Griffin's lawless and antisocial nature.
Griffin stayed at the Coach and Horses Inn in the village of Iping, run by Mr. and Mrs. Hall. His strange appearance and behavior aroused suspicion among the villagers.
Richard Ebright is the young scientist featured in this chapter. He became a renowned scientist through his curiosity, hard work, and passion for learning from childhood.
Richard Ebright started collecting butterflies as a child. This hobby led him to scientific research when he began studying butterfly behavior and biology.
"The Travels of Monarch X" opened Ebright's mind to the world of science. The book described how monarch butterflies migrate and invited readers to help study them by tagging butterflies.
Ebright discovered the purpose of the twelve tiny gold spots on a monarch pupa. He identified the chemical in the spots and found it produced a hormone necessary for butterfly development.
Matilda Loisel is the protagonist of the story. She is a beautiful young woman who is discontented with her middle-class life and dreams of luxury and high society.
Matilda borrowed what she thought was an expensive diamond necklace from her wealthy friend Madame Forestier to wear to a grand ball at the Ministry.
After the ball, Matilda discovered she had lost the necklace. She and her husband searched everywhere but couldn't find it. They decided to replace it without telling Madame Forestier.
The Loisels spent ten years of hardship and poverty paying off the debt they incurred to replace what they thought was a diamond necklace. They lived in poverty and worked tirelessly.
After ten years of struggle, Matilda learned that the original necklace was made of fake diamonds and worth only 500 francs, not 36,000 francs. Their sacrifice was unnecessary.
Bholi's real name is Sulekha, but she was called "Bholi" (the simple one) because of her mental slowness caused by a childhood accident and smallpox.
Bholi stammered while speaking due to brain damage from a childhood fall. She also had pockmarks on her face from smallpox, which made her family consider her unmarriageable.
Bholi's kind and encouraging teacher transformed her life by giving her education and confidence. The teacher treated her with love and respect, helping her overcome her fears.
At the wedding, when Bishamber saw Bholi's pockmarked face, he demanded five thousand rupees as dowry. Bholi, educated and confident now, refused to marry such a greedy and mean person.
Bholi decided to become a teacher like the one who had transformed her life. She promised to stay with her parents and serve them in their old age.
Think-Tank is the mighty ruler of Mars who considers himself the most intelligent creature in the universe. He commands a Mars space probe mission to invade Earth.
Think-Tank first thought books were sandwiches meant to be eaten. He ordered his crew to taste them. Later, he thought they were communication devices for ears and eyes.
The Martians found a book of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Think-Tank misinterpreted the innocent rhymes as evidence of Earth's advanced civilization and military power.
Think-Tank misinterpreted the nursery rhymes. "Humpty Dumpty" made him think Earthlings knew about him, "Hey Diddle Diddle" suggested they had conquered Mars, and other rhymes frightened him into canceling the invasion.
Noodle was Think-Tank's apprentice and assistant. He was actually intelligent and tactfully corrected Think-Tank's mistakes while letting Think-Tank believe he was the genius.
Ironically, Mrs. Pumphrey thought Tricki was suffering from malnutrition, when in reality he was overfed and overweight. She kept giving him more food thinking he needed building up.
Hari Singh stole 600 rupees from under Anil's mattress. This money was still damp when he returned it, and Anil knew he had stolen it but chose not to confront him.
Fowler was a young and romantic writer who came to meet Ausable hoping to see exciting spy adventures. He was initially disappointed by Ausable's ordinary appearance and room.
Horace Danby was a locksmith, which was ironic because his profession helped him with his burglaries. He made locks for safes, which gave him expertise in opening them.
Horace Danby suffered from hay fever and sneezed frequently. This weakness was exploited by the clever woman thief who offered him a cure, making him trust her.
Griffin discovered certain rare drugs that could make human body transparent like glass. He swallowed them and became invisible, but couldn't reverse the process.
Ebright's mother gave him the book "The Travels of Monarch X" when he was in seventh grade. His mother constantly encouraged his interest in learning and provided him with educational materials.
Ebright won numerous science fair prizes. He won first place at the county science fair and went on to win at the international level with his research on insect hormones.
Monsieur Loisel had been saving 400 francs to buy a gun for hunting trips with friends. He sacrificed this to buy Matilda a suitable dress for the ball.
The replacement diamond necklace cost 36,000 francs. The Loisels borrowed money at high interest rates and worked for ten years to repay this enormous sum.
Bholi was afraid she was being taken away from home to be sold, as she had heard her mother discussing her as a burden. She didn't understand she was going to school.
Bishamber was about 45-50 years old, well-to-do but limped, and already had grown-up children from a previous marriage. He was not an ideal match for young Bholi.
The story is narrated by a historian in 2100, describing events from 2040 when Mars attempted to invade Earth. The 60-year gap adds to the humorous retrospective.
Noodle cleverly gave the crew "vitamins" claiming they would increase intelligence. This allowed them to "suddenly" understand books, making Think-Tank believe in his own brilliance.
When furniture moved by itself and doors opened mysteriously in Griffin's room, Mrs. Hall was terrified and believed the room was haunted by evil spirits.
When the villagers tried to catch him, Griffin threw off all his clothes and became completely invisible, allowing him to escape. This shows how he used his invisibility for selfish purposes.
